I’m starting this blog
because Salt just literally saved my (soul) life.
A few crystals of salt so
profoundly altered my consciousness and relationship to my body today that I
feel compelled to delve into the reasons why.
The situation: Made
breakfast at home, went out, downtown, and got something to eat there. Street food with who knows what kind of oil
and salt used. A few hours later
(without making the connection at the time) I felt incredibly listless – not
really unenergetic, just blank, nothing passing through my mind, whatever was
there was placed there myself and had to be clunkily carried about like moving pyramid
bricks. I got off the bus (in such
situations being around a lot of people can be unbearable since I then have no
filter and am forced to listen to every conversation and random outburst right
inside my skull.) Walked, but after a few minutes of silence and gorgeous
summer weather still couldn’t get back to myself. I came upon a gourmet foods shop I had always
passed by on the bus but had yet to enter.
It seemed like a good time to check it out since I was on foot. Inside the elegance/ high style (beautiful
but a bit cold – wood, light) of the place was grounding (a kind of wake-up
call to culture and civilization, like a castaway finding a Bible). Samples of exotic salt: black lava, herbs de Provence,
Spanish rosemary, and a Japanese kind.
Intuitively I felt that these might help, salt being a purifier and all
around important substance. I don’t
think it was self-suggestion. If it was
then the salt acted as a kind of symbol to focus my mind, but I really felt a
profound physical and superphysical effect, comparable to taking flower
essences.
I tried some of the
Japanese salt and then the rosemary.
Suddenly, like a light being turned on, I shuttled back down into myself
(or rather, I received myself?) and things became much more subtle, colorful
and fluid in my thought process and soul.
I walked the rest of the way home reveling in the unique, wild, and
abundant gardens of Northeast Portland that I passed. In truth, I feel more ensouled than I have in
ages.
How to explain this dramatic change? That is what I am going to attempt to do.
The question I will try
to answer is: what is the connection between mineral intake and the ability to
connect spirit and body.
Around 2006 I was working
at a health food store when a sales representative from Miracle Krystal Salt
came and left some samples. Their salt comes from the Himalayas and is claimed to be even better than sea salt because of a lack of impurities and pollutants. I felt so
lucid and energetic after trying some that I ended up buying a whole pack. The same buoyant feeling returned each time I used it and so I became
convinced of its effectiveness.
Here is what a similar
product, Miracle Salt, claims their product can do:
“1. Miracle Salt is most
effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats and it is essential for the
regulation of blood pressure - in conjunction with water. Naturally the
proportions are critical.
2. Miracle Salt is vital
to the extraction of excess acidity from the cells in the body, particularly
the brain cells.
3. Miracle Salt is vital
for balancing the sugar levels in the blood: a needed clement for diabetics.
4. Miracle Salt is vital
for the generation of hydroelectric energy in cells of the body. It is used for
local power generation at the site where energy is needed.
5. Miracle Salt is vital
to the nerve cells, communication and information processing all the time that
the brain cells work, from the moment of conception to death.
6. Miracle Salt is vital
for absorption of food particles through the intestinal tract.
7 Miracle Salt is vital
for the clearance of the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky phlegm, particularly
in asthma and cystic fibrosis.
8. Miracle Salt is vital
for clearing up congestion of the sinuses.
9. Miracle Salt is a
strong natural antihistamine.
10. Miracle Salt is
essential for the prevention of muscle cramps.”*
A long and immodest list
indeed. I cannot vouch for all of these
but at least for numbers three to five, I can say from personal experience,
seem to hold true.
The thing about normal
table salt is that it is highly refined.
It is just a single compound: Sodium Chloride, NaCl, while actual rock
salt or sea salt is a complex substance with an array of trace minerals, sodium
just being one of the main elements. The
story is similar to white sugar, white flour, etc.: all attempts to
essentialize something natural, as a kind of infiltration of capitalism on
nutrition, with the idea of “adding value” to a product.
The body is not meant to
handle large doses of such a pure form of salt and as a result it gets dried
out and imbalanced since there is too much sodium and not enough of the other
minerals. Miracle Salt restores the
balance. Actually any whole salt should
work, which is why the salt I tried was so helpful for me, but Miracle Salt
claims theirs is the best due to the healing energies of the region it is
cultivated in.
